在外事接待活動中，譯員首先面臨的一道難題是稱謂的口譯。稱謂代表了一個人的職位、職銜或學銜，體現(xiàn)了一個人的資歷和地位。稱謂的誤譯不僅是對有關人員的不尊重，而且也會產生種.種不良的后果。稱謂的準確翻譯其關鍵在于譯員對有關人員的身份及其稱謂的表達是否有一個正確的理解，尤其是對稱謂語的認識。一種稱謂語很可能表示多種身份，例如，英語的頭銜語 president，譯成漢語時可視具體情況分別譯作共和國的總統(tǒng)、國家主席、大學的校長、學院的院長、學會或協(xié)會的會長或主席、公司的總裁或董事長等等。

一般說來，各類機構或組織的首長其漢語稱謂譯成英語時雖可套用通用詞 head，但從比較嚴格的意義上看，應使用特定的、規(guī)范的稱謂語。例如：

校長(大學) President of Beijing University

校長(中小學) Principal /Headmaster of Donghai Middle School

院長(大學下屬) Dean of the Graduate School

系主任(大學學院下屬) Chair/Chairman of the English Department

例：

局長 director of the bureau; head of the bureau; bureau chief。

國務院 the State Council 屬下的部為 ministry，所以部長叫作 minister。
