在外事接待活動(dòng)中，譯員首先面臨的一道難題是稱謂的口譯。稱謂代表了一個(gè)人的職位、職銜或?qū)W銜，體現(xiàn)了一個(gè)人的資歷和地位。稱謂的誤譯不僅是對有關(guān)人員的不尊重，而且也會(huì)產(chǎn)生種.種不良的后果。稱謂的準(zhǔn)確翻譯其關(guān)鍵在于譯員對有關(guān)人員的身份及其稱謂的表達(dá)是否有一個(gè)正確的理解，尤其是對稱謂語的認(rèn)識(shí)。一種稱謂語很可能表示多種身份，例如，英語的頭銜語 president，譯成漢語時(shí)可視具體情況分別譯作共和國的總統(tǒng)、國家主席、大學(xué)的校長、學(xué)院的院長、學(xué)會(huì)或協(xié)會(huì)的會(huì)長或主席、公司的總裁或董事長等等。

一般說來，各類機(jī)構(gòu)或組織的首長其漢語稱謂譯成英語時(shí)雖可套用通用詞 head，但從比較嚴(yán)格的意義上看，應(yīng)使用特定的、規(guī)范的稱謂語。例如：
