Once upon a time two peasants attempted to pass each other, and their sledges1 became entangled2.

One cried, "Give me room, I must get to town as quickly as possible."

The other said, "You give me room, I must get home as quickly as possible."

Thus for a long time they disputed.

A third peasant saw it, and said, "If you are in such a hurry, then each of you give way a little."

從前，兩個(gè)農(nóng)夫試圖迎面而過時(shí)，他們駕的雪橇卻交錯(cuò)在了一起。

There happened a controversy1 between an oak and a willow2, upon the subject of strength, constancy, and patience, and which of the two should have the preference. The oak upbraided3(責(zé)罵) the willow, that it was weak and wavering, and gave way to every blast. The willow made no other reply, than that the next tempest(暴風(fēng)雨) should resolve that question.

Some very little while after this dispute, it blew a violent storm. The willow plied4, and gave way to the gust5, and still recovered itself again, without receiving any damage, but the oak was stubborn, and chose rather to break than bend.

橡樹和柳樹發(fā)生了爭執(zhí)，比誰在力量、穩(wěn)定性和柔韌性上更有優(yōu)勢，看誰更應(yīng)得到人們的偏愛。橡樹指責(zé)柳樹，說他柔弱，搖擺不定，疾風(fēng)一來就隨風(fēng)倒。柳樹只說句暴風(fēng)雨中自見高低勝負(fù)，便不再多言。

One day, a little monkey is playing by the well.

He looks in the well and shouts: "Oh! My god! The moon has fallen into the well!"

An older monkeys runs over, takes a look, and says, "Goodness1 me! The moon is really in the water!"

A group of monkeys run over to the well. They look at the moon in the well and shout: "The moon did fall into the well! Come on! Let'get it out!"

Then, the oldest monkey hangs on the tree up side down, with his feet on the branch. And he pulls the next monkey's feet with his hands. All the other monkeys follow his suit, and they join each other one by one down to the moon in the well.

Just before they reach the moon, the oldest monkey raises his head and happens to see the moon in the sky. He yells2 excitedly, "Don't be so foolish! The moon is still in the sky!"

Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter says, "We only have one rule here in heaven. Don't step on the ducks." So they entered heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one.

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, "Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity1 chained to this ugly man!"

The next day, the second woman steps accidentally on a duck, and along comes St. Peter, who doesn't miss a thing, and with him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment2 as for the first woman.

The third woman has observed all this and not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on very tall, tanned(深褐色的) and muscular3. St. Peter chains them together and leaves without saying a word.

The woman remarks, "I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?" The guy says, "I don't know about you, but I stepped on a duck."

Daphne was a lovely blooming fairy maiden1. As she was playing merrily in the woods one day she saw Apollo the sun-god staring at her with more than amazement2 and admiration3 in his eyes. The beaming face of the sun put her to flight. The eager Apollo followed her closely behind, calling out to her to stop. His passion had been lighted by her beauty and grace. He was afraid that this might be the last time he saw her. The quick footed maiden made the best of her legs, but the passionate4 Apollo pressed hard upon her. Through rough fields and pathless woods she ran, but the sound of his pursuing feet ever grew nearer. As he ran he begged his beloved maiden to slow down, for he feared that she might fall and hurt her sparkling skin on the rocky roads. But the escaping maiden never cared so much about that. She even threw one glance backwards5. At last she was quite breathless and cried to her father, a rivergod, for help. No sooner had her prayer been uttered than answered, for she had instantly found herself glued to the ground and a layer of soft bark growing over her fair skin. She had been turned into a laurel(月桂) tree. Sighing, Apollo put his arms around the tree trunk. The trunk responded by turning thinner. To show his undying love for the maiden, he decided6 that the laurel would be his favorite tree and should be the prize of honour and fame for deathless poets and poetry. Thus the most outstanding poet always desires to be made a poet laureate.
