then a woman said, “speak to us of joy and sorrow.”
and he answered: your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
and the selfsame well from
which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
一位婦人說(shuō)：請(qǐng)給我們談?wù)剼g樂(lè)和憂(yōu)傷。
他回答：你們的歡樂(lè)是無(wú)法掩飾的憂(yōu)傷。
你歡笑的泉眼常常也飽含著淚水。

and how else can it be?
the deeper that sorrow carves into your being.
the more joy you can contain.
is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup
that was burned in the potter’s oven?
and is not the lute that soothes your spirit,
the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
除此之外，又當(dāng)如何？
鐫刻在你們身上的憂(yōu)傷愈深，你們能盛裝的歡樂(lè)愈多。
斟滿(mǎn)了美酒的杯盞，難道不是曾在陶工爐火中鍛造的杯盞嗎？

when you are joyous, look deep into your heart and
you shall find it is only that which has given
you sorrow that is giving you joy.
when you are sorrowful look again in your heart,
and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for
that which has been your delight.

some of you say, “nay, sorrow is the greater.”
but i say unto you, they are inseparable.
together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board,
remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
你們中有些人說(shuō)：“歡樂(lè)勝于憂(yōu)傷?！?br /> 另一些人則說(shuō)：“不，憂(yōu)傷更偉大?！?br /> 但我要說(shuō)，他們是相輔相成的。
它們一同降臨，當(dāng)其中一個(gè)單獨(dú)與你同坐時(shí)，
記住另一個(gè)正在你的床上安歇。

verily you are suspended like scales
between your sorrow and your joy.
only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
when the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh
his gold and his silver, needs must your
joy or your sorrow rise or fall.
的確，你們就像在憂(yōu)傷與歡樂(lè)之間搖擺不定的天平。
只有當(dāng)你們徹底空虛時(shí)，你們才能平衡穩(wěn)定。
